Dear Friend to Wildlife: Welcome to the first issue
of “E-Tails”, the E-Bulletin of Austin Area Wildlife Rehabilitation. We hope you enjoy these stories about animals
your support has allowed us to assist. Austin Area Wildlife
Rehabilitation, Inc. is a public, 501(c)(3), nonprofit, all-volunteer
organization operated by permitted rehabilitators and animal lovers.
Our areas
of focus are wildlife rehabilitation, public education and conservation. For more information, visit our website at www.austinareawildliferehab.org. Ike’s Tykes Austin Area
Wildlife Rehabilitation
worked with TWRC (a Houston-based wildlife rehab group) to help care
for the
many animals displaced or injured because of Hurricane Ike. We received 42 baby squirrels a few days
after Ike blew them out of their tree-top nests. These
gray squirrels were bottle-fed and
cared for over the next few weeks by our rehabbers and volunteers. Eventually they were old enough to be on
their own, but finding a good place to release them took some doing. Gray squirrels are uncommon in Austin because
this area does not provide the habitat they need, so we couldn’t
release them
here. Their habitat in and around Houston
was damaged by the storm, so we couldn’t release them there. After some searching we found a ranch east of
Red Rock Texas whose owners generously offered to let us release the
squirrels
on their property. The
babies were released on November 14th
and happily inhabit the pine trees there.
